Enlightenment! - an Art | Fashion experiment with e-textiles

There are genuinely beautiful companies in the world, and the Swiss enterprise Forster Rohner is one of them. The family company is a name in fashion since the beginning of the 20th Century. Forster Rohner produces the most splendid lace creations for High Fashion one can imagine. Waiting in the lobby of the headquarter in Sankt Gallen is never a dull moment. The visitor can leaf through past editions of Vogue showing the lace creations for Maisons such as Valentino, Dior and Balenciaga. Our cooperation started when I met then-Junior department leader Dr Jan Zimmermann on a congress for smart textiles. Dr Zimmermann had accepted the challenge to lead the company into the 21st Century with light-transmitting embroideries. I was intrigued by the idea. Could we create an evening dress emitting light? Dr Zimmermann was very cooperative and presented to me the different applications. The company department, under his helm, had already developed a variety of prototypes. From glowing laced bras to star-studded curtains, there were already fascinating options. Recently, their client Swiss fashion house Akris had booked an enormous runway- success with cocktail-dresses that could sparkle light. As my philosophy was to keep materials as natural as possible, I wanted to refrain from all textiles which were of synthetic origin. We narrowed the selection down to a white cotton ribbon which could transmit light. The dress is all in off- white and made of pure silk. My design of the dress was minimalistic and combined a double-layered sportswear tank top look with an elegant and swinging long evening skirt. The concept design idea was an evening gown that one could wear with sneakers or high- heels. Whatever feels more comfortable.

The dress was handcrafted by a specialist in Amsterdam, stitching hundreds of little lights into the underskirt, which we made from organic cotton. The working of the lights was in this concept frame to allow a subtle effect. The light effects should not outsmart the face or the silhouette of the person wearing it. While the dress would be worn under normal light circumstances, it will just appear like a beautiful evening dress. As soon as the lights are dimmed or switched off, the evening dress will show a soft glow. It can be used as the only light source in a spectacular glow- in- the-dark-effect. The dress can be switched on and off while wearing it. A little pocket inside the dress carries the controller of the battery which can be put into different modes. The dress is ideal for a singer, artist or presenter when there is a part of the performance that takes place in the twilight. The stylish item can be rented for performances, shows, weddings, foto shootings, videos and many more occasions. Have a look at the photographs!
