As a student of Architecture, you have to know about design and technology. However, do you have to know about Aesthetics?

In June 2019, I had the honour of being invited to give a lecture about aspects of esthetic theory at the TU Delft in The Netherlands. In this lecture, I focused on esthetic perception in the 20th and 21st Century.

Estheticism and technical efficiency do not have to be antagonists, I stated. In the opposite, esthetic research can support the sustainability of design concepts.

The lecture touched the following topics:

The aesthetics of minimalism- less is more

The scientific background of colours and wavelengths

Esthetics of Colour in Art and Architecture

The Fibonacci Code in Art, Nature and Architecture

The Mindmap of a cultural period, its time and its esthetic connotations

The speech was received well, and some students and teachers expressed their appreciation for giving more in-depth insight into esthetic theory.

The lecture-discussion included creations of the following artists and architects :

James Turell, Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar

Zaha Hadid, Zollhof Düsseldorf
